Mix and match cupcakes for fun? That will only last so long, once the pieces become consumed. These will disappear faster than leaving a small child with actual Lego pieces.

My wife was inspired by this artist, baked cupcakes last night and attempted to create fondant for her own designs. But the result was a gooey, slimy icing-like result that didn't resemble the dough-like consistency she was looking for. After further investigation this morning, 2 factors were the cause: not enough sugar, and not enough time to set. Only 16 ounces of sugar and 20 minutes to set just didn't cut it. However the results were still delicious.

She's welcome to continue to try, try again... because I'll always be the willing subject to sample the results!

FriendFeed is a Friend Indeed

This week I aggregated all of my social networks into a single source on FriendFeed. It's an interesting way to broadcast everything from Twitter, my blog(s), Pownce, YouTube, etc. And it's easy to view all of my friends' postings at a dashboard level.

Clever Desktop Background Switcher

I've really been enjoying John's Background Switcher application (for PC). This handy freeware changes my desktop image by pulling online photos, by keyword, of my choice.

This little app has a fairly robust feature set. Right now I have my settings calling images from Flickr tagged 'urban, city, sky' changing at 20 minute intervals. I realize there's plenty of other apps out there with similar functionality, but this suits my needs and runs flawlessly.

Antiquities by Christopher Conte

The Morning News features a recent short, but interesting interview of Christopher Conte. He's responsible for creating these antique, industrial, living-organism-like creatures. Christopher's day-job as a prosthetics and artificial limb manufacturer is chillingly apparent in many of his sculptures.

You can see his work at his next NY exhibition on April 5th at the Last Rites Gallery.

Increasingly web designers are developing a compassion for users who would like to read their content. What a novel idea. A List Apart provides an interesting analysis of addressing website typography in CSS (found here), comparing line heights, pixels vs. ems, body size by percent, etc.

An interesting debate and worth a read.

Being a past customer of W.A.S.T.E., the distributor of Radiohead's recent Rainbows album, I received an email from the company this morning with a surprising message:

Museum of Useful Things

MUT, as they call themselves, are an interesting bunch. With a retail storefront based out of Massachusetts, they bring their curious and unusual products to online shoppers via themut.com.

While many of the items for sale feel similar to those found at uncommongoods and elsewares, MUT has the gritty charm I recall seeing from those 2 afformentioned leaders of this quirky space today. Plus, this site's got a few items I haven't seen before. Take for instance, the Folding Step Stool (as featured in Time Out NY's Holiday Gift Guide).

At 17 bucks, this practical addition to your kitchen can tuck away by collapsing it to put it out of site. Sure, it looks like an item maybe suited for a pre-school. But I appreciate it's practicality and simplicity.

Rolling Stone: Digital Edition?

This morning, Mashable reports that Rolling Stone Goes Digital: "You know that the times are a-changing when mastodons like Rolling Stone are embracing new technologies. Well, strike that, having a digital version of a magazine is not exactly “new technology”, but I guess you gotta start somewhere, right?

Believe it or not, the latest copy of Rolling Stone will be available in a free online version, and this is the first time Rolling Stone has had a complete digital issue. This move coincides with the fortieth anniversary of Rolling Stone, but nothing that is said on the official blog indicates that Rolling Stone will continue to offer digital issues in the future. In other words, don’t expect every Rolling Stone issue to always be online (and free) from now on.

The actual document viewer used is placed in a window way too small for today’s standards, but the issue is quite readable none the less. It’s available here."

Nintendo Wii Contributes to Healthy Marriages

As MediaPost reports, the Nintendo Wii has been recently hovering in the top spots of Amazon's wedding gift registry. Their observation that "Nintendo is no longer seen as an obstacle to a healthy marriage, but as a contributing factor," is very consistent with happenings in my own relationship.

My wife and I find that by participating in Nintendo Wii 2-player bowling or tennis, it brings us closer the way actual sports and activities tend to do. There's usually a hand-slapping "good job" to commend a nicely bowled strike. Or, a thorough taunting when my tennis serve is an ace (well, in all honesty, the taunting isn't always welcome).

Now anybody can post their lives on Justin.tv. They've opened their network so you and I can now use their platform to broadcast live video. What's pretty cool is that visitors can post comments and the host can make live video responses.

Certainly an interesting way to reignite interest in a dwindling fad that exhausted it's 5 seconds of fame long ago.
